Roelant Savery was a Flemish painter and draughtsman celebrated for his intricately detailed paradise landscapes, flower paintings, and animal scenes, and is particularly notable for producing some of the earliest known painted depictions of the dodo bird. Working at the courts of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague and later Emperor Matthias, he was exposed to exotic animals and rare botanical specimens that became hallmarks of his elaborate compositions. His works are held in major collections including the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Rijksmuseum, and he is regarded as a key figure in the transition from Mannerist to early Baroque landscape painting in the Low Countries.
