Matthias Stomer was a Dutch Golden Age painter who became one of the most significant followers of Caravaggio, working primarily in Italy and Sicily. He is particularly celebrated for his dramatic nocturnal scenes illuminated by candlelight, a technique known as chiaroscuro, which he applied to both religious and mythological subjects with great psychological intensity. Key works include 'The Mocking of Christ,' 'Samson and Delilah,' and numerous depictions of the Adoration of the Magi, which demonstrate his mastery of tenebrism and his ability to render convincing human emotion.
