Louisa Matthíasdóttir was an Icelandic-American painter celebrated for her bold, distinctive style characterized by thick, expressive brushwork and vibrant color harmonies. She is best known for her intimate figurative paintings depicting everyday scenes, including portraits, landscapes of Iceland, and domestic interiors, often featuring her daughter and animals rendered with a flat, modernist sensibility influenced by her studies under Hans Hofmann. Matthíasdóttir exhibited widely in New York, where she spent much of her career, and gained significant critical recognition late in her life, with her work held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum.
