Lilia Carrillo was a pioneering Mexican abstract painter who played a central role in the development of Mexican abstractionism during the mid-20th century, challenging the dominance of muralism in her country. She studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Mexico City and later in Paris, where she was influenced by European abstraction and lyrical expressionism, developing a distinctive style characterized by luminous color fields and gestural brushwork. Her work was exhibited widely in Mexico and internationally, and she was associated with the Ruptura movement, a group of artists who broke from the nationalist figuration of the Mexican muralists in favor of a more universal abstract language.
