Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, co-founder of the influential artist group Die Brücke in Dresden in 1905. His bold, angular forms and intense, non-naturalistic colors were heavily influenced by Fauvism and African art, making him one of the most distinctive voices of German Expressionism. The Nazi regime declared his work 'degenerate,' confiscating hundreds of his pieces, but he continued to paint after World War II and lived into his nineties.
