George C. Morrison was a Grand Portage Ojibwe artist whose work bridged Abstract Expressionism with Indigenous heritage, earning him recognition as one of the most significant Native American modernists of the 20th century. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Art and the Art Students League in New York, becoming closely associated with the New York School and befriending artists such as Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning. Morrison is celebrated for his large-scale wood collages and abstract landscapes, particularly his horizon series depicting Lake Superior, which are held in major collections including the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
