Fujiko Nakaya is a pioneering Japanese artist renowned for her immersive fog sculptures, which she has been creating since 1970 when she produced the first fog artwork for the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary group Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). Her practice harnesses natural water vapor, pumped through specially engineered nozzles, to create ephemeral, ever-shifting sculptures that respond to environmental conditions such as wind, temperature, and humidity, effectively dissolving the boundaries between art, nature, and architecture. Her fog installations have been presented at major international venues including the Tate Modern in London, the Venice Biennale, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and documenta 8 in Kassel, cementing her status as a seminal figure in environmental and new media art.
