Ernest Hébert was a prominent French academic painter celebrated for his melancholic and lyrical portrayals of Italian peasant life, which he developed during his extended stays in Rome as director of the French Academy. His most celebrated work, 'La Mal'aria' (1850), depicting Roman peasants suffering from malaria, brought him widespread acclaim at the Paris Salon and exemplified his ability to blend social realism with romantic sentiment. Hébert received numerous official honors throughout his career, including election to the Institut de France, and his work remains significant as a bridge between Romantic and academic traditions in 19th-century French painting.
