Johann Henrik Carl Berthelsen was an American Impressionist painter known for his evocative, poetic depictions of New York City streetscapes, particularly in snow and winter light. Essentially self-taught as a visual artist, he brought a unique sensitivity to his urban scenes that set him apart from his contemporaries. He also maintained a distinguished parallel career as a professional singer and voice teacher throughout his life.
